Nuclear Energy Materials Microanalysis

Vision/Mission

To perform fundamental and applied research across irradiated materials science and engineering through high-resolution materials characterization across a broad range of length scales, from atomic- to macro-scale.

R&D Scope

The Nuclear Energy Materials Microanalysis (NEMM) Group performs materials characterization with an emphasis on analytical microscopy of irradiated materials. NEMM performs quantitative analysis of micro- and nanostructure to explain or predict materials performance in nuclear mixed-extremes environments. We also use our characterization tools for all applied materials science problems including automotive aftertreatment research, corrosion science, mechanical properties, national security and alloy design. NEMM also maintains a state-of-the-art metallography laboratory for materials sample preparation across all ORNL programs.

Core Competencies

  • Includes the Metallography Laboratory for materials sample preparation and imaging
  • Low Activation Materials Development and Analysis (LAMDA) Laboratory, a materials characterization facility with emphasis on analytical microscopy of irradiated materials
  • Collaboration with other ORNL divisions and directorates to provide expertise and experimental infrastructure to address materials science problems in National Security
  • Collaboration with Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division to support Naval Nuclear Propulsion research and development
